Biodiversity is a term used to describe the enormous variety of life on Earth.

We are focused on:
native ecosystem and species biodiversity
on land and in freshwater*.

 

*Our Sustainable Seas colleagues are working on marine ecosystems.

 

Unique, treasured and threatened

The native biodiversity of Aotearoa New Zealand is unique with many species not found anywhere else in the world. These species are taonga that need to be prized and protected.

Unfortunately, 81 native species have become extinct in recent history and many more are currently threatened:
