AI-driven remote native forest detection
Understand, verify and report on your native forest cover with AI-driven native forest monitoring - available on demand, anywhere in Aotearoa NZ.
Observer is an AI-driven remote detection model that utilises multi-sensor satellite and remote sensing data to differentiate native forests from other land cover.
Save time, money and effort by deploying AI to quantify your native forests.
Observer
Observer provides the area and location of native forests in your landscape. It utilises advanced AI architecture, employing a UNET neural network model that digests multispectral inputs and contextual land patterns.
Model training and processing is securely hosted on Eco-index servers within Aotearoa NZ - safeguarding data sovereignty and privacy.
To ensure the highest accuracy possible, Eco-index offers expert validation of Observer’s detections by our in-house Data Scientists and Ecologists as well as optional ground-truthing input from your own team. The resulting GIS layers and key metrics provide you with insights to boost your biodiversity planning and reporting.
Observer offers a scalable, transparent, and future-ready solution for understanding native forest area across Aotearoa NZ.
Scale
Observer performs best with forest patches of at least 0.1 hectares, across land areas of 10,000 hectares (100 sq km) or more.

0-10,000 sq km: $7/sq km
10,000-20,000 sq km: $1/sq km
Additional area: $0.50/sq kmFor example:
Native forest detection over an area of 14,000 sq km (roughly the size of the Hawkes Bay region) will cost $140,000
This is the sum of:
Base cost: 10000
Imagery fee: $4*14000
First 10,000 sq km: $7*10000
Next 5,000 sq km: $1*4000
