Wetland: Seepage

Seepage ecosystems occur alongside other wetland times. They cover small areas and occur when ground water emerges on slopes, leaving soils almost permanently wet. These conditions are only suitable for herbaceous plants but when the seepage occurs on limestone, the community can be very diverse. Herbs that occur in seepage ecosystems include NZ buttercup species, Acaena rorida, NZ mousetail, creeping foxglove, marsh arrow grass, whipcord hebe and many others.

The expected natural range* of seepage ecosystems across Aotearoa is 3,132 hectares.
